The
battle of Alamein lasted from October 23 until November 3, 1942. It
marked a turning point in the Second World War. The British Commonwealth 8th
Army (200,000 men) led by general Bernard Montgomery defeated the German
Afrika Korps (100,000 men) led by general Erwin Rommel. On our way from
Cairo to Mersa Matruh we visited the El Alamein war museum and the allied
war cemetery. Further down the road there are also a German and an Italian
war cemetery. |
